While new lawns can be installed any time between the spring and early fall, at Lush Landscaping, we recommend performing new lawn installations in the fall between late August and mid-October. During this time of the year, there’s less weed growth paired with warmer days and cooler nights — these conditions allow the grass to mature before the chilly winter months without being subject to harsh heat and droughts or rampant weed growth.

You can keep your lawn healthy by ensuring it’s exposed to the proper conditions that improve its health. While planting new lawn installations during the right season is key to helping it grow, other factors also play a role in growth success. Here are some conditions to pay attention to when you want a healthy lawn:

• Sunlight: Sunlight helps grass grow properly. When a lawn receives little sun, the grass leaves thin out, grow too long and grow more slowly. Most grass needs at least four to five hours of sunlight every day to thrive.
• Water: Like sunlight is essential for grass growth, so is water. While rain is sufficient most times, supplemental watering is a must when it’s been dry. Your lawn likely needs more water when you notice wilting leaves, remaining visible footprints, or a color change. Deep watering is often more beneficial than frequent light sprinkles to help the roots develop.
• Soil: A healthy soil encourages a healthy lawn. Before planting seeds or laying sod, ensuring your soil receives enough oxygen and proper nutrients is vital. When you maintain soil health, it allows roots to grow deep and helps water reach those roots.
• Nutrients: Nutrients are essential to retaining a green and lush lawn. Fertilizers provide the necessary nutrients for proper growth. Often, fertilizing twice during the season is enough, but you can fertilize regularly if the grass shows signs of lacking nutrients.
